Week 10: Extreme Weather

For this weeks blog I will be focusing on heat waves in Spain. Temperatures in Spain have reached up to 112 degrees Fahrenheit and scientists have named it "Zoe." This was recorded in July 24-27 in the city of Seville in southwestern Spain. Zoe was actually the First ever heat wave to have a name just like the hurricanes. Spain was ranked the first ever country to do this. These hot temperatures are happening more and more frequently and lasting a longer amount of time. The drought that had occurred over the past fews months has highly contributed to this. During July the temperatures reached about a maximum of 112 degrees and a minimum of 87 degrees.

During the summer they reached about a maximum temperatures of 106 degrees for about two weeks. Spain let out messages on social media and warnings to communicate with people to protect themselves from this major heat wave.

One major heatwave actually killed over 2,000 people in over a week. Many people were forced to flee their homes as wildfires were bound to happen and lasted for several weeks. Most of the reasons for the deaths include of less access to air conditioning. Most of their homes are not equip for this kind of weather and raises many concerns for the public.

ways to help:

-have other developed countries help to provide more air conditioning
-have a designated spot where air conditioning is available to the public
-provide ice packs, fans and paper fans for free
-establish a system to detect heat waves
-monitor local media
-have water available at all times (donations)

  1. Hello Melissa great job on the week 10 blog there is a lot of great information in this. I actually didn't know the weather got that intense in Spain. I always knew they had great weather, but the heat got intense there and it killed over 2000 people which is a crazy thing. This country would definitely be better prepared for the next heatwaves. - Suheil Ibrahim

  2. Hello Melissa,
You did a great job this week with the information you provided about extreme heat conditions in Spain. My country was very similar to yours because Bahrain is an extremely hot and arid area with rapidly increasing temperatures. Great work this week Melissa!

  3. Hi Melissa, I didn't realize that Spain got such bad heat waves. 2 weeks with 106 degree temperature is insane, I'd be interested to see how those temperatures compare to those recorded 20 or even 30 years ago. I feel many countries have seen there length in heat waves increase as well so now instead of getting a 2 day heat wave, it is now almost 2 weeks as you mention in your post. My country Greece had a similar pattern.
