Week 5: Volcanoes

There have been about 19 eruptions and 5 significant eruptions in Spain over the last 400 years and the largest concentration of volcanoes are located in Spain's Canary Islands. There are 65 volcanoes that are located across Spain but not all are currently active. The Canary Islands are well known for the frequency of the volcanic activity especially since most of their most recent eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma.

The eruptions of La Palma have caused increased changes in: home, lives and lifestyles. On December 14,2021, La Palma was considered officially over after having 10 days of no lava flow, seismic activity or sulfur dioxide emissions but caused one death and over 3,000 properties in damage and farmland on the Canary Island. It was considered the largest active volcano. La Palma threw tephramasses of at least 1 million cubic meters over 1 kilometer high.

Spain produced a new mobile alert system via SMS (PWS). Since sending via text messages could take several hours, they will be be using a cell broadcast technology, meaning anyone with a phone in a specific area will receive an alert, including tourists and foreigners.

The scientific committee for the special civil protection plan and emergency response for volcanic risks warns the citizens of Spain. They announce levels of risk through green, yellow, orange and red.

IGN is responsible for volcanic monitoring in Spain and has been designed to detect changes by using surveillance activities of seismic, geodetic, geochemical, geophysical and thermal networks. IGN then communicates this information to volcanic risk managers (civil protections)

  1. Hi Melissa,
Your post about Spain's volcanoes this week was very informative! Spain has about 65 volcanoes across Spain not all of which are active. Where Turkey has about 25 volcanoes, 10 of which are considered dormant. What is interesting Turkey's Mount Ararat is much taller than Spain's La Palma. La Palma has an elevation of 7,959 ft while Mount Ararat has 16,853 ft. Furthermore, I see Spain has taken many precautions to minimize volcanic hazards such a new mobile, alert system via SMS (PWS) and other volcanic monitoring systems. On the hand, Turkey has very limited volcano monitoring, and lack of knowledge on volcanic hazards and risk. Turkey Is extreme under prepared for a volcanic hazard.

  3. Hi Melissa!
It is so interesting to hear about how Spain is impacted by volcanoes as I never even thought about the hazards in this area. I have been to Spain once and the farmlands are so beautiful so the La Palma volcanic activity is sad to hear about.
It is so interesting that you included the list of active volcanoes and when they last erupted to create a timeline.
